Brian Gilhuly - Builder

After taking up the game of golf at the age of 14, Brian G.T. Gilhuly dedicated himself to giving back to the game he loved.

Born in Selkirk, Manitoba on July 22, 1940, Brian joined the Selkirk Golf and Country Club in 1956 and was a member of the Club until his passing in 2017.  In 1966, Brian became a Chartered Accountant and his expertise in finance would be just one of the many qualities he brought to his golf volunteering career.

Brian became a member of the Board of Directors of Selkirk Golf and Country Club in 1960 when he was 20 years old and served until 1974.  He did a second term on the Board from 1986 until 2017 during which he was the Club Treasurer from 1988 to 2017.  When a disastrous flood damaged the course in 1997, Brian was instrumental in its re - building.

In 1986, Brian began volunteering with the Manitoba Golf Association (now Golf Manitoba).  He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1989 where he continued for 21 years including from 1990 to 2005 as the Finance Chair.  Brian was also the Handicap and Course Rating Chair from 2001 to 2017.

A frequent volunteer at both Golf Manitoba and Selkirk Golf and Country Club events over all these years, Brian's commitment, expertise and passion for golf led to his involvement in course rating when the current system was adopted.  From 1991 until his passing, Brian participated in the rating of over 300 golf courses in Manitoba and North West Ontario.  Course rating is a very time consuming process that requires the rater to attend at the course, usually as part of a team, and analyze the entire course in accordance with the exacting standards of the current course rating manual.

Brian received a number of honours in recognition of his selfless dedication to golf.  He was named an Honourary Life Member of Selkirk Golf and Country Club in 2004.  In 2010, Golf Manitoba awarded him the Golf Manitoba Dedicated Service Award.  Brian also received the Manitoba Order of Sport Excellence for 25 years of Dedicated Service to Amateur Golf.

Brian passed away on September 8, 2017 but left an additional legacy to golf by donating in excess of $100,000 to both the Selkirk Golf and Country Club and to the Golf Manitoba Scholarship Fund the latter of which has now created The Brian Gilhuly Memorial Scholarship for students continuing with post-secondary studies.

When he was awarded the Golf Manitoba Distinguished Service Award, then Golf Manitoba President Harvey Goehring said: "Brian's long term dedication to the game of golf exemplifies what it means to be a Golf Manitoba volunteer".

Brian Gilhuly is an inductee into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Museum Inc., May 10, 2022.

Tom Kinsman - Builder

Tom Kinsman was the consummate golf professional during his long career in Manitoba.  He excelled at teaching and coaching the game of golf while managing a busy golf shop and mentoring a generation of aspiring golf professionals and junior golfers.

Tom was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario on June 5, 1958.  Growing up in Winnipeg, he enrolled and played collegiate golf at Bemidji State University in Minnesota and after obtaining his Bachelor Degree in Physical Education, turned professional as an Assistant Golf Professional at Southwood Golf & Country Club.  Tom worked under Honoured Member Barrie McWha at Southwood from 1980 to 1987.  In 1987, Tom accepted a position at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.  Under Head Professional Jack McLaughlin, Tom was an Associate Professional and Golf Shop Manager until 1991.

Returning to Southwood as Head Golf Professional in 1991, Tom made an immediate impact and was recognized as PGA Manitoba Professional of the Year in 1995.  He played an important role in the move of the golf course to a new site in 2011.  A skilled golfer in his own right, Tom won 6 individual titles on the PGA of Manitoba schedule.

From 1995 through 2002 Tom served on the Board of Directors of the PGA of Manitoba and was President from 1998 to 2000.

Tom is a graduate of the PGA of Canada Teaching and Coaching Certification Program and was a facilitator for that program from 1996 to 2000.

During his time at Southwood, Tom mentored many aspiring professionals who have gone on to successful careers on and off the golf course.  These men and women have won titles and become Head Professionals themselves. Many have become successful off the course as well.

Players who Tom has taught and coached have won over 40 provincial golf titles and, so far, 4 national titles.  The PGA of Manitoba awarded Tom four Teacher of the Year Awards (1999, 2000, 2004 & 2011) and in the words of Honoured Member, Rhonda Orr, Tom was "…my 'PGA Teacher of the Year' every year".

Honoured Member Todd Fanning described Tom this way:  "He taught us how to practice, conduct ourselves on and off the course, and the process for entering and playing in tournaments.  Tom always encouraged us to compete against each other even while practicing, which was invaluable as a way to prepare for tournaments”.

The final round of Manitoba Junior Tournaments invariably saw Tom walking the course and showing his support and commitment to the junior golfers he had impacted.

Tom retired from Southwood in 2018 as Golf Professional Emeritus.

Tom Kinsman is an inductee into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame and Museum Inc., May 10, 2022.

Rhonda has also been a force in golf outside of Manitoba with strong showings in the Canadian Senior Women's Senior Championship in 2015 (8th), 2016 (tie for 4th), 2019 (11th) and 2021 (7th).  She has also competed outside of Canada and was the medalist in a U.S. Senior Women's Amateur Championship Qualifier in 2018 and made the Round of 32 in that Championship in 2019.

1967 Manitoba Junior Boys Team Champions

The 1967 Canadian Junior Boys Championship was contested at the Toronto Golf Club.  The first two days (August 21 and 22) featured the interprovincial team championship.

The Manitoba Team consisted of Steve Bannatyne of Rossmere Golf & Country Club, Manfred Braovac of Strathcona Golf Course in what is now Thunder Bay, Ontario, Dave Hill of Southwood Golf & Country Club and Kenneth Redfern of Breezy Bend Country Club.  The non - playing captain was Dr. Dwight Parkinson.

Hill had won his third consecutive Manitoba Junior Boys Championship in 1967 with a 2 and 1 victory over Bannatyne.  He was the first junior boy to win three Manitoba Junior Boys Championships.

Manitoba found itself 11 strokes behind British Columbia after the first day of competition with Hill having the low score on the team with a 75.  In the competition, all four players' scores counted each day.  The second day was played in difficult conditions with wind and hard greens.  Braovac had a 73 followed by Bannatyne with a 75, Hill with a 77 and Redfern with a 78.  Manitoba's two day total of 619 was enough for a 4 stroke victory over B.C. and a 13 stroke lead over third place Nova Scotia.  This was the first time that a Manitoba Junior Boys Team had won the Canadian Inter - Provincial Team Championship.

Bannatyne made it to the semi - finals of the 1967 Canadian Junior Boys Championship losing to Doug Roxburgh 1 up.  Bannatyne was also a member of the first Manitoba Men's Team to win the Willingdon Cup Golf Championship in 1974.  He was inducted into the Manitoba Golf Hall of Fame in 2012.  David Hill played NCAA Division I golf at Dartmouth College where he was named All Ivy and All East as Dartmouth won the All Ivy and All East titles for the first time in school history.  He qualified for the NCAA Championship in 1970.  Braovac would go on to win the Manitoba Junior Boys Championship in 1968.

The 1967 Manitoba Junior Boys Golf Team was inducted into the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt, the province's highest honour, for their achievement in winning the 1967 Canadian Junior Inter-Provincial Team Championship.
